India breaches Australia's Gabba Fortress. Retains Border - Gavaskar Trophy.
India has pulled off something extraordinary today, at The Gabba in Brisbane. Australia had remained unbeaten at the Gabba since 1988, 32 years of sheer dominance at the venue. But this new, disciplined India managed to successfully end their winning streak and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The 4th and final test, which happened to be the decider with the series hanging at 1-1, started on January 15th. Australia made a giant total of 369 in their 1st innings, to which India replied with a 336, leaving Australia with a not-so-big lead of 33 runs. Australia wishing to put enough runs on board for India to chase, managed 294 in their 2nd innings, giving India a huge target of 328. Just to mention, no team has ever chased a target of more than 250 at the Gabba. India finished Day 4 with 4-0 allowing some rain interruptions, implying they needed 324 more runs before the start of Day 5, with 10 wickets in hand.
Day 5 began with India losing Rohit Sharma early. Shubman Gill along with Cheteshwar Pujara sealed a 114 run long partnership before Gill missed out his maiden test century by 9 runs. At Tea on Day 5, India were 183-3, still needing 145 runs within the allotted 37 overs, whereas Australia needed 7 'good balls'.
Cheteshwar Pujara played a marathon inning of 56 in 211 balls before Pat Cummins bid him adieu with the new ball. Captain Ajinkya Rahane played a quick knock of 24 in 22 balls showing positive intent followed by Mayank Agarwal. But the main highlight of the innings, the man who was always there in the middle, Rishabh Pant, managed to take India through the line with his magnificent innings of 89* in 138 balls. Wickets kept falling in the end, but Pant was disciplined enough and finished the match with a boundary, with 18 balls to spare.
Reminding you, India has faced a lot of trouble with the injuries and unavailability of key players. Fans and experts doubted, "can India even manage to play a fit XI at the Gabba?". People did mock them as an India A side competing against a world-class Australian attack at an Australian-dominated venue. Despite the challenges, this 'India A' team pulled off a tremendous show at Australia's fortress.
